Little Holiday in Charmouth -✨Little Angel came too ! πŸ’›

So we've had a nice little holibobs in both Somerset and Dorset, mainly to go dinosaur hunting in Charmouth which is in Dorset .

We stayed in a sweet little 18th century period cottage in Somerset ; which meant a very long drive to the beach , but husband decided it was reasonably priced and that it would be very well worth it .

We visited Montecute House , Bridport , Lyme Regis , Glastonbury , Burton Bradstock and Groves Nursery and of course Charmouth beach .

Because of the rainy weather and the country roads being unfamiliar to us , we always tried to get back to the cottage well before dark .

Then we would have our teatime in front of the woodburning stove , with cups of tea , sandwiches and cake .

Then I would leave him in the lounge watching his American football πŸ™„

I would go into the cosy and warm , little dining room , where I really enjoyed sitting at this lovely Georgian table sketching and doing my embroidery .

I had brought lots of things to do .... no internet, no radio , just the sound of the rain on the window .

These colourful embroidery doodlings are from a Hildegard von Bingen project I am doing .
Whoever would have thought such bright colours and patterns could be from the 12th century illustrations/artwork !
I love them very much  .

                                                      πŸ’›πŸ’š❤️      πŸ’›πŸ’š❤️

Naturally , my angel came too !

I wanted to finish the background .

I soon finished the background and decided to outline her angel wings .

I think it looks better now . I'm just going to do a little more work on her angel gown .

✨I do love embroidering Angels ✨πŸ’›✨ I was delighted to find this little Angel hanging up almost hidden behind the curtains in my bedroom !✨✨✨

I have been planning to start a Perpetual Botanical Watercolour Journal .

I have the journal , the paints the brushes and everything all ready to go at home but I just can't seem to get started .
I want to record the Snowdrops , the Mistletoe , the sweet lambs in the meadows and a tiny first Ladybird of the year .
I will try again when we get home .

I did manage to sketch and embroider this Snowdrop .

Today I finished the Little Green Dragon bushcraft fire starter keep . Another little Christmas present for someone I know .

Anglo -Saxon Cross Embroidery - still plodding on with it !

It's raining on and off , not too windy . We are having new windows put in over the next few days .

So I have gathered a few things together and am camping out in the summerhouse ; away from all the chaos .

Continuing on with this little embroidery of the Trumpington Cross , a stunningly beautiful golden pectoral Cross , set with cut garnets , that archaeologists found in an 7th century Anglo-Saxon bed burial of a teenage girl  in a village on the outskirts of Cambridge .

The Cross is on display at the Cambridge University's Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology .

Having three days of blissful solitude all to myself  , I should be able to concentrate and hopefully do a fairly good job of it .  I love the simple earthiness of Anglo-Saxon artwork and design .
I filled in all the garnets including the large one in the centre and and continuing to wrap the "gold"stem stitches that I worked in the beginning . In my last post I think I said I was couching , but actually what I am doing is more "wrapping" than couching . The above picture shows better how I am working .

It is quite simple stitching really , I'm deciding how to do it as I go .

Some of the garnets are missing revealing the gold foil that was laid beneath them . I have stitched those spaces with the gold thread.  It's not completely accurate but I am enjoying seeing it as it appears before my eyes .....as I take stitch after stitch  🌿🌿🌿

Γ†lfwynn's Autumn embroideries - Little Green Dragon

Dragons are a very Autumnal thing , after all , "dragons frolic in the Autumn mist" do they not ?

Well that is so the song says "Puff the Magic Dragon" by Peter Paul and Mary  πŸ‰

This will become another scissor keep . I need to go buy some ribbon to finish  it off .

Hope you are having a nice weekend . It is turning cooler now here in Cornwall . Misty evenings ....be on the look out for dragons !  πŸ‰

The Mermaid's Emerald Tail

I'm in a green mood right now . So I'll be working on our mermaid's emerald tail this weekend .

It's nice and easy , relaxing stitching . Each tiny section , I pick a shade of green from the bundle of crewel wool at my side .

                                                                 Green   πŸ’šπŸŒΏ

So I'm really enjoying , bringing a simple black and white 16th century woodcut picture of a mermaid to life .

I'm working it in the style of a traditional Maritime or British Sailor Woolie .

It is part of a family history project that I am working on .

The sun is shining here in Mullion today . Blue sky . You have a lovely weekend o.k . x

Still not quite finished " My Cornish Cottage Home Sweet Home " page for my Little Cloth Book

I thought that I had finished my Cornish Cottage Home Sweet Home page for my Little Cloth  Book  .... but on closer inspection I can still see some areas that need a few stitches more .
Strange that sometimes , when I have enjoyed working on a piece of embroidery or a water colour painting , it can be so hard to say " it is finished !" .

Comfort Stitching - Autumn

Autumn has arrived , rainbow leaves tumbling in the wind .
Breezy dog walking down our country lane , I gather pretty leaves and wish that they would keep their beautiful brazen colour on the trees for longer ... the weather has been mild during the day , cold by night ..but no frost . Last night we had some rain ...dry today here in Mullion , but the cold North wind is blowing .
Time to dig out the warmer jackets .

So I came home with my handful of pretty leaves .
To my cupboard of wool to find Autumn colours , needle and thread ....

I found an old vintage tray cloth , a lovely , soft piece of honey coloured  linen and with a pencil drew around my leaves ....I found a way to save my pretty leaves ! I began to stitch ..just simple easy needle-painting with my crewel wool .

I felt that I had to work fast in the beginning , as my leaves are turning crisp and the colours changing . This , I thought , is good for me, teaching me not to obsess about my work nor linger too long .....

Always several projects on the go ! I,m making wreaths and birdies and dolls and aprons and always thinking , thinking ahead of what I will make in the future .....

Once I have stitched around the outside of  my leaves , I worked the veins , I chose my colours and realised I could slow down the pace , this is not a race after all and now it becomes more relaxing ......the way I like to stitch .....what I call my "comfort stitching" ...... sigh .... breathe ......relax .....

"Comfort stitching" is just my stitching for joy and relaxation .....please dont ask me " Yes , but what is it going to be ?" ...It is just a joy to do ...a simple reflection... a meditation ....a prayer .

The soft crewel wool is comforting in my hands .

Today I noticed the Oak tree changing , they turn from Emerald green and gold then to paper bag brown and hang on to the branches far longer than the other tree's leaves .

I gathered a few branches blown down during the rain last night .

I worked the outline and veins of a plain brown Ivy leaf .....

...enjoyed painting the scarlet Hawthorn leaf ...the trees are heavily laden with berries .

Another Ivy leaf ....this one is butter yellow . I worked closely couching the veins in the same colour as the rest of the leaf .

This afternoon I baked a chicken, bacon and mushroom ,n,vegetables pie with a puff pastry crust , a pile of mash and buttered carrots . We took the dog for her second walk down the lane .I gathered a few more Hawthorn leaves as my other ones had changed their hue.
Later on I relaxed on my bed and worked the little randomly scattered straight stitches between the veins on that brown Ivy leaf . I work these stitches which gently support the"long and short"stitches that I will stitch over the top of them .
I noticed some dark spots on the sycamore leaf and put them in with tiny colonial knots ...I need to work the darker edges .

The two original leaves and two freshly fallen Hawthorn .

I left the brown Ivy leaf after couching the veins over and over...this leaf is just varying shades of brown ..tough on the eyes ....I will come back to it later .
I embroidered the central vein of the second little pencilled in Hawthorn leaf and am just deciding which way to work the colours .
So that is as far as I have come with it today .
I,ll do a little bit more of it in my bed before I fall asleep .

This is one of my dolls that I acquired a couple of years ago....but I will tell you about him another time .
The Chicken pie was yummy !
What are you "Comfort Stitching " ?

Shopping for braid .
