Early Medieval Fish Illumination - Embroidery- waves ⚓

I've gone back to this one again .

I decided to fill in all the lines in between the fish , representing the waves , as on the manuscript illumination .

I have mentioned before that this is from an 11th century lectionary manuscript illumination from the Abbey de Silos . In the National Library France .

I'm using cotton embroidery thread for these very thin lines . It's going to take a long time stitching them in .
It must have taken a very long time and a great deal of care for the monk scribe drawing them in with his quill and ink .

My Little Early Medieval Embroidery Bag πŸ•Š️🌿

I embroidered a little more of this . I hand stitched it into a useful little needlework bag  .

I think it is just about done .

I may just embroider an initial or some small thing in the space where my scissors are in this picture .
I do have something in mind , so I will be coming back to this again soon .

I could also add something , maybe , to each end of the toggle .

It is perfect for just the few essentials I need when doing my embroidery .

An Angel for Christmas

I have been working on this for ages , never quite happy with it , but at last I think he is finished .

Worked in a mixture of threads .

Cotton , silk , gold and a few seed beads .

It is the Censing Angel from the Stained Glass Window in the lovely Church at Cattistock in Dorset . Designed by William Morris .

Daisies in Bullion Stitch

I worked the Daisy flowers in Bullion stitch .  Probably not historically correct ....

......... also not the neatest bullion stitches . I think they improved as I went along .
I haven't done Bullion stitch for a while .  Practice makes perfect !

A Little Detail from the Luttrell Psalter

After a slightly frosty morning , the sun came out again .
We went for our morning walk over at Kynance .

It was just such a beautiful morning !

After the gloomy day we had yesterday .

                                        Pasties for lunch !

A little more stitching .
This is a detail from the Luttrell Psalter . ( which I love )  British Library add MS 42130 (medieval manuscript , 1325-1340)f151v

❄️Icy cold morning embroidery ❄️

With a hot water bottle and blanket , I sat in the car while my husband had his 8.30am hospital appointment .

A bitterly icy cold morning .

I brought my embroidery with me ...I wished I'd remembered to bring a flask of coffee .

Apart from a few small things , I got this pretty much finished . It will become a small bag for a prayer book and rosary .

I was waiting a very long time and decided to make a start on another little piece .

No snow , but heavy hail showers . Very glad I brought my hot water bottle !
I managed to finish three of these tiny oak leaves .

Very glad to get home in the warm .

My Early Medieval Crewel Embroidery - Fish - and a bit of Cornish wave watching !

Watching the waves down on Poldhu .  . . . also adorable dog doing zoomies !  ( not mine )

A little bit more of that Pointe de Bayeux  or Bayeux Stitch or Laid and Couched Stitch  .
I wonder what it was originally called  ?

Not wishing to upset anyone , I decided to change the title of this - not strictly being Anglo-Saxon .... it actually coming from an 11th century lectionary manuscript , from L'Abbey de Silos  .National Library France . Early Medieval though .

My Early Medieval Crewel Embroidery - Fish

I'm stitching this with crewel wool and so far I am working this with Knots and Bayeux Tapestry Stitch and a little split stitch here and there .

I'm not actually sure if French Knots or Colonial Knots are historically correct .... but ..oh well ....that's what I'm doing  .

And if you really want to know , mine are Colonial Knots .
